Did you know that November is Adopt-a-Senior-Dog month? The timing is so perfect for this post — this is a senior family of two chihuahuas and two black labs (don’t you love it??) who are all 10+ years old. They give a whole ‘nother meaning to the word “chill”!
Their mother is a huge dog rescue advocate and one of APR’s most passionate volunteers. She has touched countless lives with her tirelessness, one of the more recent ones being Captain, the 13-year-old black lab they just took in six months ago. They found him wandering the side of the road, abandoned and emaciated and knew that he would most likely be euthanized at his age and in his condition if turned into a shelter. So they took him in without a second thought, and he is living out his last days in peace and comfort.
You can tell that someone put a lot of work into Captain, as he knows all his commands and gets along so well with everyone and everything. Every time he looked at me I got a lump in my throat. There’s something about the weariness in his eyes, but at the same time just simple happiness that someone loves him again. He reminds me of the sweet, kind old man in the nursing home who hasn’t had a visitor for years and is now just happy to have some company. He broke my heart but filled it at the same time.
Dogs are just amazing.

We also snuck a couple in of Kiwi, an 18-year-old cockatiel:

And the two chis!

I don’t know why I keep wanting to end with black-and-whites, but what can ya do? I love the shadows in these. Jesse and Gracie reminded me so much of Sienna — her face is already going white and I can imagine her old-lady face with the white mask and sleepy eyes. These girls were so, so sweet…
