Mia is a beautiful liver-colored 10-year-old pit bull who had an emergency session with me last week. Unfortunately, sweet Mia had an accident that caused severe damage to her spinal cord, and she can no longer stand or walk. But as a testament to the amazing spirit of dogs, upon meeting her, you would never know anything was wrong except that she couldn’t run to the door and plant both paws on your chest to say hello. I drove to the session expecting to see a sad, listless pup but met quite the opposite. Mia has a huge smile and so much spunk — we were restricted to one room in her house since her mom and I weren’t strong enough to move her, but more than once she was able to scoot across the room in search of treats and attention, using only the strength of her front legs.
Right after our session, Mia was going to the vet to find out the extent of her injury and a prognosis. Please send lots of love and good thoughts her way. In just the hour I was with her, I was overwhelmed by her determined spirit and lively disposition. Sometimes I can barely wrap my head around all the lessons our amazing dogs have taught and have yet to teach us.
ETA: It will be a few months before her family knows if she’ll be able to walk again, but Mia is recovering from surgery with the amazing vets at UGA and doing well!
